SCHOOL TIPS

...making school life easier...

We have adopted the 'Beyond the Bell' strategy from the dynamic blended learning model by Kasey Bell. We will focus on this particular strategy to go BEYOND traditional learning and reinforce the concept that learning does not end when the bell rings. With digital tools and devices that are available 24/7, our preschoolers will continue to collaborate, grow, and dig deeper into their learning on their own terms and at their own pace. This is a mindset that means that learning can take place anytime and anywhere. Click here to read about the other strategies.

The dynamic blended learning strategy that we will be focusing on in the Elementary Division for the academic year 2021-2022 is the one about 'Beyond the Grade Level and Subject.' The intention is to take the students off the conveyor belt of education to give them opportunities to learn about things that interest them beyond the subject areas that we teach and even beyond what it says they should learn in each grade level. Learning does not have to fit inside a box.

We believe that true learning doesn’t fit inside a box. Neither do our students. If we have learned anything during the pandemic, it’s that school and learning do not have to fit within the boundaries of the traditional model, and most importantly, we learned that they shouldn’t. Students need opportunities to explore their own, unique ideas and interests. This requires finding ways to give students the chance to make decisions and choose topics and projects about which they are curious - passionate even.

Student choice is the key to unfolding this passion. Students are given a choice of reading, choice of project, choice of research topic, or a choice in how to demonstrate learning. Every opportunity for choice helps build decision-makers and problem-solvers. This will lead to a blended learning model that will empower our students and help them become creative, self-directed learners.

In the Secondary Division, we will be focusing on the concept of 'The End in Mind.' This simply means that teachers and students will start each task, project, day or academic year with a clear vision of the desired direction and destination and then continue by putting plans to reach that destination. To achieve goals and fulfill plans, students and teachers alike must approach their work with the backward design strategy....start with an end goal in mind, and that’s how backward design will work to ensure durable, transferable learning, and efficient student engagement.
